City of Columbus Bicentennial Bikeways Plan
Mayor Michael B. Coleman unveiled the City's 20-year Bicentennial Bikeways Plan in May 2008. The plan was created with significant input from residents, businesses and bicyclists.
Today, the City has approximately 87 miles of bike routes and trails, and is working to increase that dramatically by the Bicentennial in 2012. The vision is for 31 miles of off-street trails to be added, as well as 58 miles of on-street bike lanes and routes. In addition, local suburbs and the County plan to add another 49 miles of trails and routes.
There also will be new signs and pavement markings to make biking safer. Hundreds of new bike racks will be installed as well as other amenities.
It is projected that by 2028 there will be 728 miles of bikeway facilities in central Ohio.
Share the Road Columbus: Phase 1
The implementation of the first phase of the Bicentennial Bikeways Plan includes the Share the Road Columbus campaign. The City is investing funds from the recently-passed bond package to implement phase one of the plan over the next four years.
The initial area of focus for Share the Road Columbus is North High Street, from Nationwide Boulevard to Morse Road.
There will be new traffic signs and pavement markings to educate and inform.
Share the Road Columbus Advisory Board
Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman appointed a Share the Road Advisory Board – citizens representing diverse interests, including neighborhoods, organizations and businesses along High Street, cycling groups, public agencies and others, to guide and inform the team working on the project.
